Dr. Allen Bowers and Mike Pockoski, PE of Helical Drilling will be leading the discussion highlighting the differences between aggregate piers and rigid inclusion ground improvements with emphasis on soil-structure interaction related to non-uniform support of footings and floor slabs.

Additional topics covered will include:

  • How the construction of the different pier types influences stress concentrations on these structures.
  • Critical issues to watch out for in ground improvement projects and practical solutions to prevent potential problems in design and construction.
  • How FEA modelling is used to provide accurate and efficient design solutions.
  • The impact of the new 10th Edition of the MA Building Code, which has specific requirements about ground improvements related to structural design (that will likely flow out into building codes in other New England states).
